Bikes have a steering to allow it to go where the rider needs it to. On most cycles steering is a simple system that is intuitive.
The forks, front wheel, handlebars and handlebar stem are all parts of a steering and move together and independently from the frame so that the bike can be steered.
The front wheel is mounted onto the forks which in turn is attached to the frame. There are two main types of forks:
The handlebar stem joins the forks and the handlebars. It is possible to replace the handlebar stem if the rider is having some discomfort with their riding position.
The headset is fitted into the head tube and onto the forks. It’s got bearings inside that allow the rider to steer the bike.
The handlebars support the rider’s cycling position and assists with controlling and steering the bike. The handlebars are also where components such as brake levers, gear levers, lights, bell and other accessories are placed. The two most common designs are drop bars and flat bars, the handlebars you will have will depend on your bike or preferred riding position.
