To help tackle the uneven terrain some bikes have been equipped with a front and rear suspension. Their job is to absorb a lot of the shock when riding over rocky ground. They make the bike easier to control and allow for a more comfortable ride over rougher terrain.
A full sus mountain bike has an articulated rear end and forks that move up and down. This means that as you ride over rocky ground, the bike moves under the rider who can then control the bike more easily and therefore tackle technical routes at greater speed. Some bikes only have front suspension. Generally called “hardtails”, these bikes are a lot cheaper, lighter and require less maintenance. It also means that the bike has to be handled more over tricky terrain and riding downhill isn’t as easy. Because weight isn’t as much of an issue as it is with road bikes, many hybrids come with front suspension in the forks. It is designed to offer comfort rather than performance, so the forks have less travel than a mountain bike. Rear suspension would add too much weight, so to add comfort some hybrids have suspension built into the seat post.
